Academic Groups

There are four primary Academic groups in Bioimaging Sciences. Each group is centered around a specific imaging modality or research theme although the research topics within any given group are often broad. There are also substantial interactions between faculty within and across each of the groups listed.

Image Processing and Analysis

The Image Processing and Analysis Group (IPAG) at Yale has been involved with a broad range of work in the area of biomedical image analysis for over 20 years. Throughout our work, we have endeavored to take advantage of all available information, both from prior knowledge of physical properties, geometric constraints, or statistical variation, and from imaging data from various modalities. Medical imaging problems typically lie in a well-defined domain. The challenge is to take advantage of the given domain to solve the often complex and subtle problems posed.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Research in the Magnetic Resonance Imaging Group is focused on technical advances in imaging. These include imaging sequences applied to the body or the brain, methodology development in molecular imaging, cardiac imaging and functional brain imaging, and basic science research in each of these areas.

Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy

Ever since the discovery of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), the field of MR has diverged into MRI and Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (MRS). Whereas MRI typically observes water signal, MRS detects all chemicals above a minimum concentration threshold. The members of the Yale MRS group have been pioneers in many of the applications of MRS to the study of metabolism in vivo.

Positron Emission Tomography

The Positron Emission Tomography (PET) Group includes investigators who measure a wide range of in vivo physiology in human beings and laboratory animals with a non-invasive research tool.
