Research Interests
My thesis work focuses on generalized gradient encoding for magnetic resonance imaging. Conventional encoding is performed using only first order spherical harmonics - namely, X, Y, and Z. Encoding with second-order and higher-order harmonics results in spatially-varying resolution that can be tailored to the region of interest (ROI). Likewise, with their reduced dB/dt over the ROI, higher-order harmonics could potentially allow faster gradient switching, reducing acquisition times. Finally, tailored gradient fields hold the potential to more fully exploit the spatial information provided by RF surface coil profiles, improving parallel imaging performance. Gradient shapes may be varied so as to optimize the hybrid encoding function of the gradient and RF coil fields.
